Second on a series of seven MOVE Webinars, the MOVE Project will present its work in the Falkland Islands on July 16. After a brief introduction about MOVE and the MAES process, our main presenter will be Dr. Dan Bayley from the South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute (SAERI).
This talk will discuss the valuation of ecosystem services associated with the giant kelp forests of the Falkland Islands. The work focuses on estimating the direct services of harvested kelp-associated fisheries, and potential harvested kelp alginate value; as well as the indirect services of nutrient cycling and carbon storage / sequestration. The approach uses satellite remote sensing to measure the current extent of kelp forest, and estimates underwater density using SCUBA ground-truthing. Finally, a range of valuation techniques are applied to account for each ecosystem service measured.
